The Enough Number Is a Range, Not a Doorbell

People talk about the FIRE number as if it is a doorbell. One day the portfolio reaches the target, a sound plays, and a responsible adult appears to declare you free. Real life is less ceremonial.

Enough is usually a range. At the low end, quitting is possible but brittle. In the middle, the plan works if you remain flexible. At the high end, you have more safety but fewer living years purchased back.

The lower bound

The lower bound answers: “Could this work if I make reasonable adjustments?” This version accepts part-time income, spending cuts after bad markets, a smaller home, slower travel, or delayed luxury. It is not reckless if those levers are real and emotionally acceptable.

The upper bound

The upper bound answers: “What number would make me feel safe enough that I am no longer using fear as a planning tool?” That number can be useful. It can also become a moving target that protects you from having to choose.

If every extra year of work buys only a slightly thicker blanket, ask whether warmth has become hoarding.

The decision lives between them

Between the bounds, the question changes from math to temperament. How flexible are you? How employable are you? How much does work cost your health? How much joy is available now that might not be available later?

Read the math of walking away beside your retirement horizon. The enough number should illuminate the decision, not postpone it forever.
