After FIRE, relocation becomes seductive. Lower costs, better weather, slower pace, prettier mornings. But many people evaluate places like tourists and then wonder why daily life feels thin.
The better question is simple: can this place support your ordinary week?
Test routine, not romance
Spend time there without vacation behavior. Buy groceries. Work out. Use public transit. Sit in bad weather. Find a doctor. Notice noise, loneliness, language friction, bureaucracy, and whether you can imagine Wednesday afternoon without a special plan.
Map your anchors
Where will you move your body? Where will you see people repeatedly? Where will you read, work, cook, repair, volunteer, or wander? A beautiful place without anchors can become a postcard you are trapped inside.
Price the hidden costs
Lower rent may come with travel back to family, car dependency, healthcare complexity, or social isolation. Higher rent may buy walkability and proximity that reduce spending elsewhere. Compare whole lives, not housing lines.
Use the half-day life and the friendship problem as relocation filters. The right place is not the one that photographs best. It is the one that makes a good ordinary week easier.
